By the time Playa Vista’s management brought us in, 90% of the lighting was non-operational.

What “Full Scope” Actually Means

When Playa Vista’s management brought in Los Angeles Lighting and Electrical, we didn’t start with a product catalog. We started with the space itself, and with a client who knew exactly what they wanted.

Playa Vista’s management team is design-savvy. They weren’t looking for a quick fix or an off-the-shelf replacement. They wanted the popular European aesthetic: clean architectural lines, minimalism, and lighting that reads as part of the building rather than something bolted onto it. That raised the bar for us considerably, a generic recessed fixture or a standard pendant swap wasn’t going to deliver the look they were after.

We assessed before we specified anything. Our team ran full photometric calculations and developed a new lighting layout based on the actual space, not a generic template. We also created design renders based on their vision, so management could see the clean, minimalist look before a single fixture went in, and compared those renders against the photometric performance data to make sure the system delivered on both sides: the aesthetic they wanted and the light levels the space actually needed. Before committing to the full installation, we also built a physical mockup on site, so management could see and experience the actual lighting in real life, not just on paper, before we touched the rest of the property. That layout was reviewed and confirmed with Playa Vista’s management before we finalized any product, so there were no surprises and no assumptions, and no gap between the minimalist, architectural look they wanted and what we ultimately installed.

We supplied a system we could stand behind, because we build it ourselves. Once the layout was approved, we specified our in-house Linear LED Pendant Lighting system (our architectural linear pendant product line), fully modular with L, X, T, and Y-shaped connectors that let us configure continuous runs to match the actual geometry of the space. It’s also the right product for the look Playa Vista wanted: continuous linear runs read as clean architectural lines rather than a series of individual fixtures, which is exactly the minimalist, European feel their management team was after. And because we manufacture this system ourselves, the client isn’t dependent on a fragile, one-off supply chain for replacement parts years from now. That was, after all, exactly what put them in this position in the first place.

Playa Vista’s management had already looked into fixing this before we got involved. What they kept running into was the same problem: companies that could design, or companies that could manufacture, or companies that could install, but rarely one team that could do all three, and take responsibility for the outcome as a whole. We were able to take on the full scope of the project ourselves, from design through fabrication through installation, without splitting the work across multiple vendors.

We didn’t hand it off to a subcontractor. Our own C-10 licensed electricians handled the full removal of the failing system and installation of the new one. No handoffs between a design firm and a separate installation crew. One team, accountable for the whole job.

The Result

The Resort went from a lighting system with a 90% failure rate, and an expensive, unreliable repair cycle, to a fully operational system built on hardware Los Angeles Lighting and Electrical manufactures and supports directly. The space reads the way it was always supposed to: cohesive, intentional, and upscale, rather than a patchwork of fixtures held together with hope and expensive replacement parts.

In short: Los Angeles Lighting and Electrical replaced a fully failed custom lighting system at The Resort in Playa Vista with a fully modular, in-house Linear LED Pendant Lighting system, restoring 100% of the lighting and achieving the clean, minimalist, European architectural look the client’s management team wanted, verified through design renders, photometric analysis, and an on-site mockup before full installation.
